Kansas - The Ultimate Kansas (2002)
Rock | 2cd | EAC Rip | Flac + Cue + Log | covers
Epic/Legacy 508066-2 | rec: 1974-82 | 1010Mb

Epic/Legacy's double-disc set The Ultimate Kansas pretty much fulfills the promise of its title. Although it doesn't delve into the group's latter-day recordings for MCA and other labels, that's not a problem because most listeners -- whether they're fairweather or dedicated fans -- will want to concentrate on the group's peak in the '70s, which is precisely what this does. Over the course of 26 tracks, all the hits and album-oriented radio staples are featured, usually in their full-length album versions, plus a number of fan favorites and key album tracks that help draw a full picture of what the group did.

Following the good reception for the two tracks featuring Dave on Conny Conrad's Generations CD, the two got together to record a whole CD of collaborative material. It's a powerful set, matching Conny's guitar and arrangements with some of the finest and most striking songs Dave has produced for a while - the rocking "Call To Action" is a standout track for many, the poignant "Deep In The Darkest Night" does it for others.

Crystal Palace are a progressive rock band from Germany. In the band are Yenz (vocals, bass), Frank Köhler (keys), Frank Brennekam (drums) and Nils Conrad (guitars). Also included are some well-known guests; Colin Edward (Porcupine Tree) and Yogi Lang and Kalle Wallner of RPWL fame. The band has been around since the mid '90s and System Of Events is their sixth studio album. With a name like Crystal Palace one would expect progressive music and that is exactly what you get although this batch of tunes is as melodic as it gets. That is what makes this music so utterly enjoyable; these guys know how to write a good tune...

This long - awaited CD is a follow-up to Ptah, the first work by Phaedra. Most of the tracks have been recorded in the Nineties by the classic Phaedraline up. There are lots of differences between Ptah and Beyond the Storm: the lyrics, written and sung by Bonvecchio, are in English. Every song tells a single story unlike the previous concept album Ptah. BTS has more of a refined classic prog approach with Yes and Genesis influences. Going into details, the album features the title track which was the very first song composed by the band, the suite Phaedra regularly performed since 1995 but never officially released until now.

When the Swedish band Moon Safari planned their 2012 European tour, they wanted to take along a musical surprise for their fans. Recording a complete new album wasn't possible for there wasn't enough time. However, a release with some new material could be done! At the time the band recorded their latest album Lover's End (2010) they couldn't include all the songs they'd written. One piece that lasted for nearly 25 minutes was left out. This track, Lover's End Pt. III: Skellefteå Serenade would be a perfect surprise, a kind of a souvenir, for the people who intended to visit their concerts in Europe!

Minimum Vital creates some very lush vocal textures with very interesting harmonies. The music has some very infectious rhythms. They mix art-rock influences from "Yes", an amazing virtuosity coming from fusion, many innovations and a deep mark from medieval and southern European traditional musics. From these diverse elements, France's Minimum Vital has certainly its own individuality on the desk of progressive rock.

A number of the tracks have been given a subtle remix by David to bring them in line with his personal requirements while others have been given more obvious updates and changes. All the material has been completely remastered. Like everything else he does, musical iconoclast David Sylvian's idea of a retrospective compilation is very different from the norm. Sleepwalkers is a 16-track, hour-plus collection focused on his many collaborations during the previous decade. Included are alternate takes from his own albums, remixes, reworked material and his contributions to the albums of others.

Over the past decade, Steven Wilson's relationship with prog rock over has grown increasingly intimate. He previewed a killer new band on the live album Get All You Deserve -- woodwind/multi-instrumentalist Theo Travis, keyboardist Adam Holzman, session bass and stick player Nick Beggs, drummer Marco Minnemann, and guitarist Guthrie Govan -- put a diverse, sophisticated face on Wilson's 21st century brand of prog. The Raven That Refused to Sing and Other Stories is their first studio outing. Wilson was also able to coax Alan Parsons out of semi-retirement to co-produce and engineer the effort, and he fully committed: the album's crystalline, detailed sound and spacious ambience reflect some of his best work behind the boards.

Milestone reissue! In 1982 Cassiber (phonetically: ‘a message smuggled out of prison’) crashed like a locomotive into the Deutsche Neue Welle. Founded by Heiner Goebbels, Alfred Harth, Christoph Anders and Chris Cutler, Cassiber managed to fuse materials and attitudes drawn from experimental rock, fringe jazz, punk, pop, plunderphonics, improvisation, close structure and musique concrete with an energetic and complex form of studio (and then concert) composition that was unique in its combination of diverse experimental approaches to form with a risky, emotional and expressive mode of execution...

Famous among Progressive rock fans worldwide for being probably the classiest (and most complete) publication in this style, the Finnish magazine Colossus had the great idea to ask thirty bands of the whole world to illustrate the national Finnish epic: "Kalevala". It is made of old ballads and traditional songs, but is also part of a huge group of legends, which has inspired both J.R.R. Tolkien for his mythic "Lord Of The Rings" and composer Sibelius, among others. The idea that contributed to the creation of "Kalevala - A Finnish Progressive Rock Epic" was to use exclusively instruments of the Seventies, in order to obtain the "Aging" that the story needed...

Released August 2011. The latest album features 14 carefully crafted songs from the mysterious imagination of Mr Bill Nelson. Bill Nelson is both an enigma and a highly public person whose motivations sometimes seem shrouded in complex mysteries, yet whose at-times prodigious output amounts to public development of song ideas and musical experiments. He has been both a guitar hero and the background figure in any number of art installations, exhibitions, and theatrical presentations. While difficult for record company executives to grasp and often obscure to the general public, Nelson has nonetheless built up a strong and loyal fan base around the world.

The lineup for this incarnation of the Mechanics is: Mike Rutherford, Paul Carrack, Peter Van Hooke, Gary Wallis, Jamie Moses, Rupert Cobb, Abbie Osmon, and Paul McGee.

This album was the first one on Laurent Thibault's new label Theleme and was recorded at the famous Herouville studios. Singing in English, Ledissez's voice was certainly an acquired taste (reminding of Family's Chapman), but the group's many other assets certainly made up for that: Meynet's violin and Guerin's flute and the frequent use of percussions graced their blending of rock and jazz, but not really being a jazz-rock group either...

His third album for Electric was released in 1978. "Fear Of The Dark” saw Gordon backed by a band of outstanding musicians such as John G. Perry (Bass), Rod Edwards (keyboards) and Simon Phillips (drums) and featured many outstanding tracks...

Scandinavian prog is yet to receive its official history – if that’s possible, given the peninsula’s rock line being as straight as a fjord. And there’s no better example of that than this Danish band whose legend crossed the regional borders and who might have been the first people in the world to use the “W.W.W.” abbreviation as the title of their 1971′s album, one of the five represented here...
