Monstrance (Andy Partidge) - Monstrance (2007)
Rock | 2cd | EAC Rip | Flac + Cue + Log | covers
APE CD 017 | rel: 2007 | 550Mb

Monstrance is the name given to a trio comprised of XTC's resident guitarist, songwriter, and figurehead Andy Partridge; Shriekback keyboardist (and way-back XTC member) Barry Andrews; and drummer Martyn Barker, also of Shriekback. Any expectations that the self-titled Monstrance might sound like either of those venerable outfits can be tossed right out the window, though. This is two discs of purely improvisational music: no overdubs, no composition or rehearsal -- just three exceptional musicians heading into the studio and playing what their minds and hands tell them to, with little regard for accessibility, form, or mood. One might expect it to resemble free jazz, and Partridge has made no secret of his affection for same.

After having been involved in several brazilian bands from various musical backgrounds, Raphael Montechiari recorded his first album in the year 2009. Jointly published by the Musea and Rock Symphony labels, "How Was The Future?" logically gives plenty of space for his beloved instrument: the keyboards. But this would be unfair not to mention the fact that Montechiari Project is supposed to be a real band. One could even say that the twelve tracks here show a remarkable team spirit. Musically speaking, we're most of the time getting away from the traditional Seventies symphonic music dear to the South-American School, to join the ranks of the best current Progressive rock trend...

TRITONUS was an early project initiated by Peter K. Seiler, a German art-student who continues to make music today and is a well-regarded new-age/ambient/classical composer and performer. Seiler's intent was to create a 'classical rock' band in the tradition of EMERSON, LAKE, and PALMER, complete with heavy keyboards and Lake-inspired English vocals. This band deserves a place in the Archives for their two distinctly different but undeniably progressive studio releases, particularly the highly symphonic and ambitious "Between the Universes".

From the beginning, one of Musea's aim has been to re-release major French Progressive rock albums from the Seventies. The French album was proud enough to create digital versions of works by Atoll, Mona Lisa or Ange, together with more obscure, but talented bands. How many others existed during that period, composed and performed live, without leaving any discographical trace? Acanthe was one of them: a group from the Grenoble area, it existed from 1973 to 1977. Thanks to Frédéric Leoz, the original writer and composer, some original tapes were recently re-discovered, leading, after a lot of re-working effort, to "Someone Somewhere"...

Uriah Heep's by-the-books progressive heavy metal made the British band one of the most popular hard rock groups of the early '70s. Formed by vocalist David Byron and guitarist Mick Box in the late '60s, the group went through an astonishing number of members over the next two decades nearly 30 different musicians passed through the band over the years. Byron and Box were members of the mid-'60s rock band called the Stalkers; once that band broke up, the duo formed another group called Spice.

"Russian Roulette", the last project under the name Triumvirat is a very impressive pop effort, full of session musicians and featuring the comic relief and lyrics of Arno Steffen on vocals. It was again an enormous departure however, from the band’s trademark sound. Like its predecessor, it is more of a Jürgen Fritz solo album than a Triumvirat album.

Although they began as an artsy prog rock band, Styx would eventually transform into the virtual arena rock prototype by the late '70s and early '80s, due to a fondness for bombastic rockers and soaring power ballads. The seeds for the band were planted in another Chicago band during the late '60s, the Tradewinds, which featured brothers Chuck and John Panozzo (who played bass and drums, respectively), as well as acquaintance Dennis DeYoung (vocals, keyboards).

The tenth studio album by British progressive rock mainstay IQ shows them at their best, and with a definite edge.Is it possible that a band, like a good wine, can continue to improve with age?Can you possibly top legendary albums such as The Wake,Subterranea or Frequency? After just one listen to IQ´s tenth studio album the answer is a resounding Yes! Without doubt The Road Of Bones is a unique masterpiece, fitting perfectly into the band's impressive body of work whilst adding a new perspective.IQ's secret has always been to evolve their style while maintaining the essence of the band's own unique brand of progressive rock:strong guitars embedded in lush keyboard melodies,a pounding yet still jazz-influenced rhythm section and the distinctive vocals and unmistakable lyrics of frontman Peter Nicholls.

Simon Says is a band currently based in Gothenburg, Sweden. They started out as a project back in 1994, and had a long and turbulent history on the road from project to band. In 2002 the group more or less stabilized, and have had few line-up changes after that time. The concept album "Tardigrade" is their third release overall, and their second as a more or less stable outfit. Simon Says is one of many bands exploring a style of music referred to as symphonic rock, and their take on the genre, at least on this album, is of the classic type. Listening through the recording, it is obvious that Genesis is a major influence..

Marillion was initially formed as an instrumental band in 1979 by guitarist Steve Rothery (b. November 25, 1959; Brampton, England), drummer Mick Pointer, bassist Doug Irvine, and keyboard player Brian Jelliman.

They released their first album as Syzygy in 2003, and six years later their so far most recent studio album "Realms of Eternity" appeared. Towards the end of 2012 their so far most recent release appeared, a massive box set consisting of two DVDs and one CD, featuring concert footage and extensive interviews with the band. And as with their previous creations, self-released through the band's own label. A certain fondness for sophisticated 70's hard rock in general is required, as well as a taste for progressive rock from the same decade...

...The heavier, more synthesizer-oriented outfit made quite a few albums in the 1970s; 1976's The Roaring Silence made the Top Ten, and featured the number one hit "Blinded by the Light" (Mann also made the Top 40 with another Springsteen cover, "Spirit in the Night"). Ironically, despite Mann's oft-proclaimed preferences for serious explorations of jazz, blues, and progressive music, it's his pop/rock recordings that hold up best, and for which he'll be remembered most.

A song from Echolyn's 1992 self-released album Suffocating the Bloom included the lines, "I'm not sure I want/To sell to those that want to buy/Go through hell for those that want to buy." Rarely have lyrics been this foretelling. The group did decide to sell -- to Sony, who signed them, released As the World, took off the shelves and locked away their previous three albums (as part of the record contract), and offered them almost no support. By the end of 1995 the group had gone through hell indeed and split with bitter feelings. When the Sweet Turns Sour (a bittersweet wordplay on an old Genesis song) was intended to bring closure to weeping fans. It gathers unreleased tracks and demos of songs the guys were working on when they called it quits.

A stunning, and staggering, piece of modern neo progressive rock, this album from German band Sylvan deals with the almost impossibly sad subject of a review by a father of his dead daughter's diary - she killed herself. Throughout, much in the way that Marillion's Brave did, the narrative is relentless and tells a huge story, but in a sensitive and understanding manner. The vocals by Marco Gluhmann are exceptional throughout, and his bandmates create a wonderful musical pastiche which, to these ears, is extremely original, thus probably placing it more in the symphonic rather than neo category. There are some very heavy phases, but, in the main, the album is filled with huge melodies.
