"Sceneries" is the eight studio album of the Hamburg based progressive rock band Sylvan. The band stated that “Sceneries” is their longest and most personal work ever. Two CD’s cover the album which, conceptually orientated and divided into five chapters, deals with the ups and downs in life and the striving for bliss. Although conceptually planned, “Sceneries” isn’t a conceptual album in classic definition. There’s no continuous story told like on their masterpiece “Posthumous Silence”, it’s more a storyline including five individual episodes which all have in common the thematic priority: the search for those very things, that make our life worth living...

Silver Rails is Jack Bruce's first solo studio album since 2003's fine More Jack Than God. Bruce recorded the set at Abbey Road with producer Rob Cass and collaborated with a dazzling array of musicians. Notably, he brought back John Medeski and Cindy Blackman Santana from the Spectrum Road project -- a tribute band to the Tony Williams Lifetime -- which released its own album in 2012. He also enlisted son Malcolm Bruce and guest guitarists including Phil Manzanera, Robin Trower, Bernie Marsden, and Uli Jon Roth. Bruce wrote songs with longtime collaborators Pete Brown and Kip Hanrahan, as well as his wife, Margrit Seyffer.

This band was active from 1971 until 1981 with six releases plus one live album. Their style is similar to Emerson Lake & Palmer, Rick Wakeman, and The Nice. There are clear Classical influences. The bands music consisted of vocals, guitars (Ludovít Nosko); keyboards (Marián Varga); guitars (Karel Witz); bass (Fedor Freso) and drums (Dusan Hájek). Their albums contain long tracks all composed by Varga. The compositions are solid and have Classical inspirations. An example is "Hommage a J.S. Bach" or "Concerto in D" and other tracks, the guitar have much space supported by superb keyboards (Hammond organ, mini Moog, piano).

Los Canarios created an outstanding 73 minute work based on Vivaldi's Four Seasons. Obviously, the music is very Baroque in nature because of the original but Los Canarios's version is much heavier because of the electric instrumentation of a rock band. You may instantly think of ELP's take on Pictures at an Exhibition but Los Canarios take a more refined approach relative to ELP's bombastic and sometimes erratic interpretation. But don't be fooled: Ciclos is a heavy and dynamic work in its own right with plenty of synth and organ work as well as guitar. Ciclos is a classic of the Spanish progressive scene. If you like heavy prog dominated by synth and guitar, check this out.

"Russian Roulette", the last project under the name Triumvirat is a very impressive pop effort, full of session musicians and featuring the comic relief and lyrics of Arno Steffen on vocals. It was again an enormous departure however, from the band’s trademark sound. Like its predecessor, it is more of a Jürgen Fritz solo album than a Triumvirat album.

Although they began as an artsy prog rock band, Styx would eventually transform into the virtual arena rock prototype by the late '70s and early '80s, due to a fondness for bombastic rockers and soaring power ballads. The seeds for the band were planted in another Chicago band during the late '60s, the Tradewinds, which featured brothers Chuck and John Panozzo (who played bass and drums, respectively), as well as acquaintance Dennis DeYoung (vocals, keyboards).

Without doubt The Road Of Bones is a unique masterpiece, fitting perfectly into the band's impressive body of work whilst adding a new perspective.IQ's secret has always been to evolve their style while maintaining the essence of the band's own unique brand of progressive rock:strong guitars embedded in lush keyboard melodies,a pounding yet still jazz-influenced rhythm section and the distinctive vocals and unmistakable lyrics of frontman Peter Nicholls.

Simon Says is a band currently based in Gothenburg, Sweden. They started out as a project back in 1994, and had a long and turbulent history on the road from project to band. In 2002 the group more or less stabilized, and have had few line-up changes after that time. The concept album "Tardigrade" is their third release overall, and their second as a more or less stable outfit. Simon Says is one of many bands exploring a style of music referred to as symphonic rock, and their take on the genre, at least on this album, is of the classic type. Listening through the recording, it is obvious that Genesis is a major influence..

US band Syzygy was formed in 2003, but with a past history going back to the 1990's and a band then called Witsend. They released their first album as Syzygy in 2003, and six years later their so far most recent studio album "Realms of Eternity" appeared. Towards the end of 2012 their so far most recent release appeared, a massive box set consisting of two DVDs and one CD, featuring concert footage and extensive interviews with the band. And as with their previous creations, self-released through the band's own label. A certain fondness for sophisticated 70's hard rock in general is required, as well as a taste for progressive rock from the same decade...

...The heavier, more synthesizer-oriented outfit made quite a few albums in the 1970s; 1976's The Roaring Silence made the Top Ten, and featured the number one hit "Blinded by the Light" (Mann also made the Top 40 with another Springsteen cover, "Spirit in the Night"). Ironically, despite Mann's oft-proclaimed preferences for serious explorations of jazz, blues, and progressive music, it's his pop/rock recordings that hold up best, and for which he'll be remembered most.

A song from Echolyn's 1992 self-released album Suffocating the Bloom included the lines, "I'm not sure I want/To sell to those that want to buy/Go through hell for those that want to buy." Rarely have lyrics been this foretelling. The group did decide to sell -- to Sony, who signed them, released As the World, took off the shelves and locked away their previous three albums (as part of the record contract), and offered them almost no support. By the end of 1995 the group had gone through hell indeed and split with bitter feelings. When the Sweet Turns Sour (a bittersweet wordplay on an old Genesis song) was intended to bring closure to weeping fans. It gathers unreleased tracks and demos of songs the guys were working on when they called it quits.

A stunning, and staggering, piece of modern neo progressive rock, this album from German band Sylvan deals with the almost impossibly sad subject of a review by a father of his dead daughter's diary - she killed herself. Throughout, much in the way that Marillion's Brave did, the narrative is relentless and tells a huge story, but in a sensitive and understanding manner. The vocals by Marco Gluhmann are exceptional throughout, and his bandmates create a wonderful musical pastiche which, to these ears, is extremely original, thus probably placing it more in the symphonic rather than neo category. There are some very heavy phases, but, in the main, the album is filled with huge melodies.
